The longstanding, cultural significance of Nike’s Air Max
First introduced in 1987, the Air Max introduced the ‘window to the sole’, exposing the Air Unit that makes Nike sneakers so comfortable. Nike’s Air Max sneakers are loved by men and women alike, so much so that they have their own holiday each year in March. Air Max Day, on March 26, is a dedicated date for Nike to release their latest Air Max drops to the public, including new collaborations and editions. Whether it’s the Air Max Plus, Air Max 90 or Air Max 270, we keep our collection up-to-date to ensure you’re spoilt for choice.
The Air Max continues to be one of the world’s most popular shoe, even 30 years on! Just like the AF1, the Air Max is a timeless silhouette worn by athletes, fashionistas and casual Nike fans alike. Whether you’re looking for your first pair of Nikes or you’re a sneakerhead adding to the collection, Foot Locker carries a variety to suit any style.

FAQs
What was Nike’s first shoe?
The first Nike shoe was nicknamed the ‘Moon Shoe’ and was created by Nike’s co-founder, Bill Bowerman. The idea for the shoe was first conceptualised when Bowerman wondered whether the grooves in his waffle iron would provide extra traction when playing sports.
How do I know what model my Air Max is?
Your Nike Air Max sneakers will have a model number located under the size and above the barcode on the tag. The tag and barcode is stitched into the sneaker’s inner tongue, and will indicate what model your sneakers are.
Who invented Air Max?
Nike’s Air Technology was developed with NASA engineer Frank Rudy in 1978., replacing the previously used EVA soles. The Air Technology began to roll out across Nike models, but the pouch remained hidden in the sole. In 1987, Tinker Hatfield created the first window design exposing the sole of the first Air Max model.
